I International Congress on “Climate Litigation and Environmental Justice”
We are pleased to present and invite you to attend the International Seminar 'Climate Litigation and Environmental Justice', jointly organised by the Network of Environmental Lawyers (RADA) and the Faculty of Legal Sciences of the “Universitat Rovira i Virgili” (URV), which will take place in the Campus Catalunya, Tarragona, from 5th to 7th June 2025.
Despite the persistent demands of citizens in a context of climate emergency, State policies on environmental matters in general and on climate in particular are not advancing at the pace they should be to address it. The negative impacts of this lack of adequate responses on the part of state legislators are growing and potentially enormous, threatening the very foundations of the legitimization of political power: good governance at the service of citizens and, subsequently, the guarantee of human rights. Against this backdrop, litigation in the courts has become the institutional alternative through which the state can demand respect for human rights and effective policies to combat climate change and defend biodiversity.
The seminars aim to analyze the impact of the rulings in some relevant cases of climate litigation in the European Union, both in the legal, media, social and political spheres. More specifically, in the first place, the focus is on analyzing the legal basis of the judgments. Secondly, the seminars also aim to analyze the question of the implementation and effectiveness of judicial decisions, as well as their effectiveness in achieving legislative reforms and the role played by media and social pressure on the ability of judicial decisions to fulfil this normative function. Finally, in the light of the above, the aim is to analyze what objectives have driven litigation and whether these have been achieved, to draw conclusions about the strategy to be followed in the future.
With these aims in mind, academics, environmental lawyers and members of activist associations involved in some of the most impactful European climate litigation have been invited to share their experiences and views on climate litigation.
This conference is part of the ERASMUS+ Climate Justice Living Lab project, funded by the European Union through the INDIRE Agency.
